Kitchen Volunteer Orientation

March 3, 2016

This February, The Kitchen had a great volunteer orientation. Fourteen new volunteers come to learn about how to get involved with Kitchen programming - a full house!

Our Kitchen AmeriCorps VISTA member Allie went through an overview of hunger and issues of food security in the community, mindfulness while interacting with clients, and then all the volunteers jumped into a cooking activity to become familiar with the Second Harvest Kitchen space.

Kitchen volunteer Anita went through a demonstration about how to make a salad dressing, as well as how to modify various types of dressings to add your own unique twist. Making your own salad dressings at home can be a fun way to add your own twist to a salad or veggies. Plus, it can be an easy way to save money, by using ingredients already on hand.

This orientation featured a "Salad Challenge" where all volunteers got into teams to work to create a gourmet salad using only the ingredients provided. The four teams had fifteen minutes to prepare and plate a whole salad to present to the group. One twist was that each group had to create their own unique salad dressing, using what they had learned in the demonstration.

In the end, each team had a very unique and delcious salad, with enough for the whole group to try.
