10 Random Acts of Kindness

February 16, 2024

Tomorrow is Random Acts of Kindness Day. Research shows that kindness may increase happiness and self-esteem while decreasing stress and emotional reactivity. The recipient tends to value the act of kindness even more than the giver of kindness anticipated. Kindness is also contagious. When people are on the receiving end of an act of kindness, they are more likely to do something kind and generous for someone else. So, one simple act of kindness can brighten someone’s day but it is also likely to have a ripple effect where kindness is spread even farther.

Here's 10 ideas for random acts of kindness:

  1. Prepare a snack or meal for someone. Maybe you have a coworker who seems stressed or know an elderly neighbor who could use a hot meal.
  2. Reach out to an old friend, teacher, or mentor to let them know how much they meant to you.
  3. Pay a compliment to someone you don’t know.
  4. If you have a great customer service experience, let their manager know.
  5. If you have household or clothing items you no longer need, donate them.
  6. Write thank you notes or give treats to local nurses, police officers, or other emergency responders.
  7. Leave a positive review on a blog or website.
  8. Stay present in conversations by putting your phone away.
  9. Volunteer in your community.
  10. Be kind to yourself! End the day by expressing gratitude to yourself for something you did well that day.
