Garam Masala

September 29, 2016

It’s the annual year of the pulse crops! Chickpeas (Garbanzo Beans) are a great source of protein and can be used in soups, salads, and Indian dishes such as Chana Masala. We used Leanne Brown’s Good and Cheap recipe for Chana Masala which combines cumin seeds, onion, garlic, ginger, coriander, turmeric, masala powder, canned tomatoes, chickpeas, and water. We made our own masala powder with the ingredients below:

  • 2 tablespoons turmeric
  • 2 tablespoons coriander
  • 1 teaspoon cumin seed
  • 1 tablespoon peppercorns
  • 1 teaspoon fennel seed
  • 1 teaspoon mustard seed
  • 2 dried red chili peppers or 1 tablespoon crushed red pepper
  • ½ teaspoon cloves

Just like Herbs de Provence, there are many variations of Garam Masala. It is a “warming spice” mix; Garam means warm in Hindi and Masala means spice mix (indianfood.about.com). We tossed all of these ingredients into the vitamix, and blended on a medium level of 5-7 for a few seconds. The beautiful, orange spice mix smells delicious and can also be used in many curry dishes!

The final product!
